"Kyrgyz Aboriginal Horse as a National Treasure"

On November 29, 2024, a round table dedicated to "Kyrgyz Aboriginal Horse as a National Treasure" was held in Bishkek. The event was held as part of the activities within the "Revival of the Kyrgyz Aboriginal Horse" project conducted by the “Golden Hoof” consortium and with the participation of the RDF.

The purpose of the round table was to identify and discuss the relevance of the revival of aboriginal livestock breeding in the context of climate change and the degradation of mountain ecosystems in relation to the protection of the Kyrgyz Aboriginal Horse. The objectives of the event included the presentation of the practical experience of the “Golden Hoof” consortium project on the conservation and revival of the Kyrgyz aboriginal horse, demonstration of the value and potential of the Kyrgyz aboriginal horse for Kyrgyzstan in the field of environmental optimization of agriculture in the context of climate change and degradation of mountain ecosystems, and development of basic recommendations for implementation of aboriginal livestock farming in Kyrgyzstan. Around 40 participants took part in the event representing academic and government agencies, as well as the custodians of traditional knowledge, and local and international organizations working in the field of agriculture and ecology. In addition to the main program, two short documentary films were presented which were prepared based on the experimental livestock farm established within the project. The latest publication on the “Spiritual and Cultural Value of Kyrgyz Aboriginal Horse” was also presented at the round table.

Within the framework of the current Project, RDF experts participated in the research on the environmental component. In the future, it is planned to initiate a more comprehensive study, and RDF will expand its research dedicated to impacts and interactions between aboriginal horses and ecosystems.
