RDF visited vocational school No. 18.

The Rural Development Fund, with the financial support of the European Union, launched a new project "Capacity Building and Empowerment of Vulnerable Children and Young People in Difficult Life Situations: Step Up". The team of the Public Foundation visited one of its project partners, Vocational School No. 18 in Bishkek.

The vocational school will celebrate its 45th anniversary in 2023. Its history goes back to April 21, 1978. In 1995, vocational school #18 received the status of a vocational lyceum. The vocational school is also a center for social and labor rehabilitation of orphans, the disabled, graduates of children's homes, and other socially vulnerable groups.

According to the director of the school, Bakyt Maldybekov, currently 30 out of more than 600 lyceum students are children with disabilities and orphans. 80% of the students are from other regions of the republic.

The vocational school offers scholarships, free accommodation in a dormitory, and four meals a day free of charge to students with disabilities and orphans. There is also a physician, a psychologist, an educator, and a medical station with a physical therapy room.

Education in the institution is organized on the basis of grades 9 and 11, on a budgetary and contractual basis. The vocational school provides training in car repair, sewing, catering, and hotel business, including cooking. The lyceum has equipped classrooms, laboratories, and workshops. In addition, students get practical training at enterprises. A sports hall, gym, assembly hall, canteen, and cafeteria are available for students' physical and cultural development.
