Workshop on Global Alliance for the Conservation of the Sacred Snow Leopard Population
Project Coordinator of the project "Kyrgyz Traditional Ecological Knowledge in the Basis of Protection of the Snow Leopard and its Habitat at the Level of Local Communities" Ms Akmatova Kuluipa and local expert for Talas oblast Kurmanbaev Akylbek as part of the Delegation from Kyrgyzstan with the support of the Public Foundation "Institute for Sustainable Development Strategy" (ISDS), participated in the workshop, which was held in Mongolia in the territory of the National Park "Khustai Nuruu", from April 1-9, 2016.
This workshop was initiated in order to prepare for the next meeting of the Global Alliance for Snow Leopard Conservation, which was scheduled for the second quarter of 2016, considering all recommendations and proposals taken into account at the meeting during the first meeting.
The main objectives of this workshop were:
The workshop program was intense with the main focus on the practical part of working with tablets and smartphones, in order to finalize together with the participants a specially developed application, for technical devices, using which it would be possible to track and collect data on snow leopards. The application gives the possibility to collect and transmit information directly from community residents and people closely related to the life of the leopard and its habitat, those who met it on the way or saw it from afar. The application allows to collect unified information base.
During the workshop, all participants had the opportunity to make suggestions on how to improve the application, as well as share new ideas that were noted and finalized for the next Global Alliance meeting.
Participants included researchers, spiritual practitioners, experts and representatives of mountain communities from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, the United States and the Russian Federation. Together, they shared ideas and innovative proposals that can make a positive difference in the development and promotion of this idea and allow for the conservation of the snow leopard together with local communities in their habitats.

- To introduce aspects of indigenous culture into environmental education through programs supported by the Global Snow Leopard Conservation Alliance and other programs in Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Russia.
- Collective discussion, development of a pilot project and work plan, training in wildlife monitoring techniques on tablet and smartphone platforms and story visualization technologies.
- Discuss indicators of success - what they represent, why traditional indicators are important, and what has been done by others so far.
- Create case studies to serve as a starting point for developing specific indicators in snow leopard conservation.
