What We Do

Promotion of traditional knowledge

On August 9-13, 2011, the leader of the Pastoral Network "Kyrgyz el akyl kazyna" initiated by RDF with the financial support of the Christensen Foundation, Altyn Dzhanyshbaeva, together with representatives of RDF held a series of informational meetings in At-Bashy district of Naryn province. The meetings were attended by farmers, pastoralists, traditional knowledge keepers, SCS workers, pasture committee, local women's associations, as well as ordinary residents of local communities.

The representative of the Network gave a detailed and accessible talk about the Network, its history and mission, moreover, the attendees raised the issue of the need to popularize traditional knowledge, disseminate it among young people and preserve the unique customs and traditions of the Kyrgyz people. Information materials were also distributed: the first bulletin of the Network, booklets and posters about traditional knowledge.

Finally, and most importantly, more than 50 traditional knowledge keepers and practitioners joined the Network's membership during this trip. "Our trip once again confirmed that Naryn Oblast is a region rich in traditional knowledge, it is a great source of many undiscovered but very interesting and historically important materials about traditions and customs of our people," says Altyn ezhe. - But, just as in other parts of our country, not everyone and not always manages to preserve and pass on this knowledge here. Now that we have gotten to know the local representatives, we can work together on these issues, which will surely yield great results.
