Project "Strategic Support to Local Communities Protecting and Managing Natural Territories"
The objective of the Project was to create a general picture of the situation of local communities protecting natural territories in Kyrgyzstan in order to raise awareness of the public, government agencies and international organizations about the activities, needs and interests of these communities.
Within the framework of the Project, activities were focused on building the capacity of local communities in strengthening the community networks. The final results of the Project were a Summary Document based on information about these communities collected in the Database and an interactive online map. The results of the Project were presented to the public and government agencies at the final event, which also served as a platform for meeting and exchanging experiences between local communities in order to establish long-term relationships between them.
Project objectives were:
Objective 1. Research Consultations and meetings at the national and regional levels were held, as a result of which a summary document was prepared describing the general situation of natural areas protected by local communities in Kyrgyzstan.
Objective 2. Database Formation of a database of existing and potential local communities managing natural areas. Creation of a Digital Online Map of Local Communities that Protect Natural Areas.
Objective 3. Network Assistance in the formation and development of a network of local communities managing natural areas.
Objective 4. Support Provision of the necessary support to selected local communities managing natural areas, including 6 communities whose projects are supported by GEF SGP grants, in the process of self-development.
Objective 5. Information Conducting a national campaign to inform about local communities managing and protecting natural areas, their role in preserving biodiversity, as well as challenges and opportunities.
Objective 6. Events Conducting events to exchange experience and knowledge between communities managing and protecting natural areas.
